10.30 a.m Visit to Spoltore: “S.Panfilo fuori le mura” old church, the old town.
SPOLTORE
Spoltore is a town of about 18.000 inhabitants in the Province of Pescara. Villa Raspa, one of Spoltore’s districts with
Santa Teresa, Villa Santa Maria and Caprara d’Abruzzo, shares its east border
with Pescara. The Town of Spoltore overlooks the Adriatic Sea from the top of a hill covered by Montepulciano
d’Abruzzo vineyards and olive trees, between the Pescara and Tavorivers. It is supposed that its name comes from the German word (same in
English) “spelt” (“farro” in Italian). Spoltore still looks like a medieval
town, shaped through history by different occupants.
The monastery is in XV-century-Spanish style,
while the adjacent church of San
Panfilo out of the wall was built in 1084. The church of San
Panfilo Bishop, instead, was erected in XIII century and the ancient castle dates back to the XI century. However, the
history of Spoltore is still rather unknown, as well as the origin of De Cesaris castle, and its foundation very likely dates back to a
Pre-Roman era. Today there are many efforts from local youth to value the huge
historical heritage of this relatively small town.
Spoltore, just 10 km from Pescara, might be
considered as the real historic centre of bordering Pescara. Some youth clubs
and bars try to keep alive the old town, one of the most beautiful borgos
(villages) of the Province of Pescara.
